PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, involves taking a specific combination of medicines as a prevention method for people who are HIV negative and may be at risk of HIV infection. If you have taken a drug to prevent an HIV infection (PrEP or PEP), you are asked to wait three months from last use of the drug to donate blood. Individuals with specific questions about eligibility can contact the Red Cross Donor and Client Support Center at 1-86. Individuals do not need to tell staff that they are transgender. If Red Cross records have the incorrect gender, presenting donors may ask staff members to make the change upon registration. This step helps ensure donor safety and accuracy of records. Red Cross staff members are required to verbally confirm demographic information, including gender, with all presenting donors. See additional blood donation eligibility criteria. There is no deferral associated with being transgender, and eligibility will be based upon the criteria associated with the gender the donor has reported. The Red Cross will no longer ask donors to answer both male and female questions when attempting to donate. The FDA revised guidance states, “In the context of the donor history questionnaire, FDA recommends that male or female gender be taken to be self-identified and self-reported.” This change allows blood donors to register with the gender in which they identify. More information about this study is available at. If the study’s scientific evidence supports the use of the different eligibility questions, it could lead to further efforts to change the MSM eligibility criteria. This study is a first step in providing data that will help the FDA determine if a donor history questionnaire based on individual risk would be as effective as a time-based MSM deferral in reducing the risk of HIV in the blood supply. The study is focused on evaluating alternatives to determining donor eligibility. In order to gather data related to the possibility of using an individual risk assessment behavior-based health history questionnaire in the U.S., the Red Cross, along with One Blood, Vitalant and partner LGBTQ+ community health centers, are participating in a pilot study funded by the FDA in select cities that could potentially lead to changes for blood donor eligibility criteria for gay and bisexual men. However, as a regulated organization, we cannot unilaterally enact changes concerning the MSM deferral policy. We continue to assist in evaluating alternative donor eligibility criteria and the expanded use of new technologies to work toward elimination of donor eligibility questions based on sexual orientation that would no longer be necessary. We are committed to working with partners toward achieving this goal. The Red Cross recognizes the hurt this policy has caused to many in the LGBTQ+ community and believes blood donation eligibility should not be determined by methods that are based upon sexual orientation. blood collection organizations must follow this federal requirement. The FDA guidance “ Revised Recommendations for Reducing the Risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Transmission by Blood and Blood Products” states, “Defer for 3 months from the most recent sexual contact, a man who has had sex with another man during the past 3 months.” All U.S. You can also view the Red Cross statement on the final FDA guidance. Once the Red Cross implements the new guidance, the information on this LGBTQ+ Donors page will be updated at that time. At this time, the below eligibility information remains accurate until the Red Cross is able to implement the changes. The Red Cross is currently working on changes to our regulated processes that will allow those who were previously ineligible to give in the future, in alignment with the new donor criteria. The Red Cross is planning to implement FDA’s final guidance on August 7. The Red Cross celebrates the elimination of blood donation policies that are based on sexual orientation and also recognizes there is more work to be done to make blood donation more inclusive. The American Red Cross is committed to achieving an inclusive blood donation process that treats all potential donors with equality and respect. On May 11, 2023, the FDA issued final guidance regarding an individual donor assessment for all blood donors regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Active Listening in Practice - 5 ExamplesĪctive listening is the process of listening to the speaker mindfully, providing feedback, observing their body language and other non-verbal cues, and being empathetic towards their emotions to ensure effective communication.7 Tips to Improve Your Active Listening Technique.Reflect what he has said to you, and expand on it to give him more words and to learn ways to describe his feelings. Children usually correct their parents if their feelings are described incorrectly. Sometimes when parents are learning active listening skills, they worry that they will incorrectly summarize and label their child’s feelings. Show your child you care about what she is showing on the outside and may be feeling on the inside by talking about all the feelings. For example, your child might feel sad and afraid at the same time. Help him deal with and understand his feelings, by talking with your child about his feelings.Ĭhildren may have several emotions at the same time. Telling your child to stop feeling a particular way does not show your child you are trying to understand how he feels. Sometimes it is difficult to summarize or label your child’s feelings because you think he should be responding in a different way. You can just sit with your child while she is upset or stay physically close and hold or comfort her. You can let your child know you are paying attention to how she feels by what you do even if you don’t say anything. Your child may not know himself what he is feeling and by talking you can figure it out together. Let him know that you are paying attention by saying, “It seems like you are upset or “It sounds/looks like something is bothering you”. For example, your child may be crying but you may not know if he is angry, scared, or sad. There may be times when you are unsure what your child is feeling. Reflection of emotions is not always easy. This gives your child a word for the emotion and helps him learn that it is ok to talk about feelings. When you reflect your child’s emotions, you watch your child’s behavior and describe the emotions he seems to be having. Basically, anything that contains at least as much protein as net carbs fits the bill, according to nutritionist Sonya Angelone, RD. And it's super important if you're trying to build muscles, which help boost your metabolism. "Since protein moves more slowly through the stomach than carbohydrates and fat, it can contribute to feelings of fullness," nutritionist Kelly Jones, RD, previously told WH.
